Rob, are you sure a scaler will do anything for you picture???  I believe
the plasma already has good circuitry and that scalers etc were mainly for
use on projectors etc.



I'd be interested if it does improve the picture though :-)



I can't remember if you went for the Panasonic or Pioneer (or other)
plasma? I've got the series 5 50" Panasonic and feed it with Sky+ RGB
out - through RGB Kat5 - through a JS RGB to YUV converter - through my YUV
switching amp (Onkyo) - into the plasma YUV input. Picture is excellent
(not tried direct RGB though, as I wanted the switching capability of my
amp - also got YUV DVD player).

Thanks Keith. Serves me right for rushing into things that I don't fully
understand! The reason for going for the component unit was that my next
'upgrade treat' was to be a Iscan scaler which I understand only has
component inputs (+S-video.). Yes you're right it was partly to free up
an input, the s-video input which is rendered un-usable if you have
anything plugged into the composite input.
I'm sure Phil at Letsautomate will allow me a swap/credit. :-)
I was also being lazy in that I didn't want the hassle of re-soldering
my cabling at either end!!! I Guess I could make up a VGA to phono lead
at the patch panel end? Would save unsoldering my patch panel. Would
that work OK?

fact. Using an RGB to S-Video converter will also give a worse picture
than
an RGB signal simply because RGB is the purest form of analogue signal

People using an RGB to S converter to replace a Composite Video feed

notice quite an improvement in picture.

People using an RGB to Component converter to replace a Composite Video
feed
will notice a great improvement, likewise using Component to replace
S-Video
will also yeild an improvement as you are moving up the quality chain.

TV tubes, Plasma Screens, Projectors and LCD screens all create an image

Component was primarily introduced to the American market where TV sets
lacked any form of RGB input and it has wrongly been credited as the
purest
form of signal which it isnt. It is also known as YUV or YCrCb and
consists
of a monochrome picture containing the brigtness info, and two colour
difference signals that are decoded to give the individual colour
signals.

RGB is different in that the RGB signals are actually 3 monochrome
pictures
containing the brightness information for ONLY that colour. Because no
encoding or decoding takes place this is the purest form of signal.

An audio analogy would be Dolby Pro-Logic vs Dolby Digital. Dolby
Pro-Logic
has the surround and centre information encoded in with the left and
right
audio tracks and must be decoded whereas Dolby digital carries 6
discrete
audio channels. Because each channel is discrete there is no
"contamination"

One further point, if the colours are brighter then either the RGB
settings
were too low or you have the colour setting way too high for the
Component
input. That can make things look grainy due to saturation of some of the
circuitry. RGB will definately be the best.

Is there a reason why you didnt consider the RGB to Plasma converter and
it
is specifically designed to connect RGB signals to the VGA input on a
Plasma
screen and as VGA is an RGB signal you should get exactly the same
quality
but still leave your Composite input available which I believe was your
original reason for changing to component. Maybe John would take the
Component Converter back in exchange for a Plasma Converter.

To re-iterate, the fact that the picture is worse than RGB is not a
reflection on the Component converter but is due to the fact that
Component
is a lower quality standard than RGB.
