The pipes, dripper and everything past the valve is the same whatever
system you use. Given the time, a mechanic timer would do fine. You could
then replace the timer with a 12v valve available for a few quid from
rswww.com.

Alternatively forget about all this automation stuff and just ask one of
the neighbours to pop round and water.
