Hi Ken,
Check out the Qprox sensors. They are not IR but charge coupled devices.
Self calibrating etc. I am currently building a prototype touch sensor.
They are way cool. Check out the video demos on the website.

Ah, what I bet they don't tell you is about calibrating the damned things,
they are a real PITA to do and they do not like fluorescent lighting at
all!
It throws them out, something to do with the wavelength used for fluro
lighting so when you calibrate them you have to shield them from all
external lighting and even then they can be well dodgy in some situations.
I
imagine that sunlight hitting them at the right time would have much the
same effect as hitting an IR receiver, it would just confuse the life out
it.
