Home automation plan
I am putting together a home-automation plan for a new flat, and=20
would welcome any feedback or suggestions.
It is a newly built three bedroom ground floor flat with shared=20
entrance hall. Internal walls are stud partition, and some areas=20
have a 2ft false ceiling (hall, bathrooms, kitchen, and utility). It=20
has a concrete floor with underfloor heating. Boiler and CH room=20
unit (Siebe Lifestyle LP722) are in the utility room. Each room has a=20
thermostat (Cewal). Hot water cylinder and underfloor heating feed=20
are in the store to the right of the bathroom. Consumer unit and gas=20
meter are in the store to the left of the bathroom. Node zero will=20
be placed here as well.
Floor plan and my initial HA wiring/layout plan may be found at:
http://www.geocities.com/iwilson2003/ha/floorplan.gif
http://www.geocities.com/iwilson2003/ha/haplan.gif
Initially I will just install a data network and a Comfort=20
alarm/control system. S-video output from Sky+ will be distributed=20
over cat5e via Kat5 modules. I can distribute to several rooms using=20
the existing Sky+ outputs. Later I will buy on of Keiths S-video=20
matrix switchers when it becomes available. I will also add a=20
Homevision Pro system in the future.
I might also leave the Smartfit heating control system until a later
time. Either that, or get someone in to connect it up. I'm happy
enough with wiring, but not to sure of my way around a heating=20
system
I dont plan on any CCTV.

Questions
-----------------------
1. How does the comfort phone input connect up when ADSL is being
used? Does it require a microfilter?
2. Is it possible to place a microfilter inline for each of the
four phone patch-panel outlets. It would be nice to filter the phone
lines at node zero, and not in the rooms that the lies are patched
through to.
3. I'm still a little unclear as to what I need in the way of=20
infrared. Xantech seem to do several options. Is it an ok
solution to use microlink IR receivers in each room, and a
791-44 IR amp/splitter at node zero? Whst IR receiver would
be suitable for placing, say, on top of the TV? How would this
connect up to the cat5 outlet?
4. Where can I get a patch panel suitable for the phone? I am
looking for the type that has IDC punchdown for the incoming line,
and four RJ45 sockets wired together. Can I put a microfilter
inline before this?
5. Where can I get a coax distribution panel? I want to be able
to patch thru one TV rf signal and one RM radio rf signal to any
of the CT100 room outlets.
6. I plan to install two towel warmers in the bathrooms. These
rooms are already wired for this, and have a blanking plate in
a suitable place. How can I add X-10 control of these? Do I
need to run wires back to node zero? (I may not be able to run
wires from the socket, since it is in a tiled area)
7. I'm still unsure as to what cat5 wallplate system I will=20
use. Clipsal modular is nice and saves wall space, but it is
very expensive (a quad cat5 will cost approx =A350!!!).
8. Should I install speaker cables? I guess it would be nice to have=20
an MP3 server at node zero and pipe music to various rooms=20
(controlled via Vinyl App on a Compaq Ipaq PDA ;-)
9. What sort of PIR's?=20
10. I plan on getting a 9u or 12u wallmounted 19" rack - not full=20
depth, maybe 350 or 400mm deep. Best source I've found so far is=20
Videk. Anyone else got a better source?
11. Finally, anything else I've left out?
Thanks in advance,
Ian
