It is very disappointing but in talking to 'The Met' they said .

You must contact your local police station as that is where the crime has
been commited

But there is no crime yet - I said - it's just waiting to happen

A crime is not a crime until it actually happens

So they won't help either ?

Probably not

Ahh but the listed seller knows nothing of the auction and the
contact is not the seller ,and I am showing having placed a bid when I
haven't etc

We know that this goes on a lot on eBay - you will probably be asked to
wire
funds via Western Union to Spain or Italy

But there are no goods

You don't know that until you don't receive them

Catch 22 then

Yep -we get almost no cooperation once a foreign (even EEC) country is
involved

But they have hijacked a sellers account to sell and my account
to bid

Happens all the time I suggest you contact eBay ? How did they get your
email address did you contact the seller ?

Yes I emailed the seller and next thing I see I have a bid
entered for the item

Can you retract it ?

Haven't tried - I am not the winning bidder so O haven't
bothered.

Suggest you do

Will go on my eBay record though

Yep - sorry about that

The 'listed' seller never got my email as his account was
'hijacked' how does that happen

Very easily and frequently on eBay - sometimes for just a few minutes and
then it is carefully restored so the real owner never realises

This is really bad I thought that eBay was more secure than that

Moan at eBay

Have you a number

They only deal via email

Even for fraud

Yep - makes it very awkward

They are not very responsive or concerned

I can't help you

But people are going to lose thousands.

I know -and they will - suggest you be very careful - this is happening all
the time

And you can't help ???

Only once the crime is evident and then if a foreign country is involved it
is a nightmare of non co-operation

Very comforting

Sorry - try eBay - only suggestion - they can take the auction down - what
is it by the way ?

It is a XXXXXXXX

Ahh yes - we have already had a couple of other calls re this, I have it
scribbled on a bit of paper here

So is it being looked into ?

I referred them to eBay, just like you.
