Here is my experience -

When we built our house about 5 years ago, virtually all windows are PVC
slider in a frame. I mounted the switch/sensor part of the contact in
the fixed frame "sill" about 9 inches from the corner. I then placed two
"low profile" magnets in the frame of the double glazed window using a
jig.

The magnet is only about 1/2" long and fit within the frame of the
window without getting too close to the glass assembly. I used a jig so
I could make sure I did not drill too deeply in the frame so as not to
break the seal of the double glazed glass assembly. It also ensured that
the magnets would always be in the right location (this is important as
the smaller magnets have a lower "gap" tolerance).

As an added bonus, using two magnets allows me to alarm the window when
it is closed or partially opened (6") for ventilation. Anyone opening
the window further would trigger the alarm.

The key here is to contact the manufacturer of the windows and make sure
you know how much space there is between the outside of the frame and
the seal of the glass assembly. This took a bit of work but in my case
they finally gave me some drawings so I could figure it out. Gave myself
some room for error (there's mostly) and built a jig. It worked very
well.

If you want more info, let me know. Hope this helps.

Hi Pankaj,

I am really wondering if there are special contacts, ie low profile ones
etc. I suppose I really should look at alarm suppliers sites to see what
would suit the job best.

Any advice appreciated at this stage :)

Cheers, Des.
