This used to annoy me too, but if you've got a linux box, check out Grip
/ DigitalDJ. Grip (a CD ripper/encoder) now includes a "multi-artist"
checkbox, so if it's a compilation album, you tick the checkbox and it
gives you the option to record different artists for different tracks.
If the FreeDB info includes both artist and track in a standard format
(say separated by a hyphen or slash), it will split the information and
fill in the artists for the various tracks for you.

This still can't be recorded in ID3v1 tags, but it can be recorded in
ID3v2 tags, and on DigitalDJ. This is a complementary MP3 organiser to
Grip, which is based on a database, and organises the data similarly to
how Keith describes. But Grip will automatically upload this data to the
database when you rip the CD, which should save some typing in. It also
includes other nice features, like a gain adjustment field, which might
appeal to the DJ in Keith.

Personally, I think the DigitalDJ interface is a bit lame, but you could
just use the database and create your own interface. That's what I
intend to do.

Cheers,
