Sorry for the much-delayed response. Keeping up with this list is a
full-time job.

I've been playing with IDE RAID and caddies for years. I'm not that
knowledgeable about the hardware, but the advice I have been given by
those who seem to know better than me, is that hot swapping of IDE is a
dangerous game. It may be that specialised kit like Graham's can handle
it, but you should not expect bog-standard IDE disk caddies to do so.
You are very likely to damage your system. And whatever the claimed
capabilities of a caddy, I understand that it will not handle
hot-swapping where you have more than one disk per IDE channel.

I think I read that the ability to handle hot-swapping is one of the
features introduced in Serial ATA, so we may have more potential for
cheap hot-swapping in the future.
