Its a beige box with a jack socket to take a "Plug 420"
These were fitted onto phones wired for a "Plan 4" installation
aka a Plug
in phone that you could move around the house at a time when most
phones
were hard wired.
Early answering machines were also fitted with a plug 420 which is the
most
likely reason for the box being fitted there.
One other possibility... if it contains some circuitry it could be for
an
old fashioned headset as these also had a plug 420 on them. If it is for
a
headset I dont think it is of BT/GPO origin as all the headset units I
have
seen in the past were grey and about 4" x 6" x 2", that
looks to be about 3"
x 2" x 1".

I got the keys to my new house the other day, and there's a couple of
objects in there that I can't identify, the first one I've found out
via
Google that it's an aereator thing for the central heating for removing
air from the system ... nice.
The beige box thing though has no markings on it, can anyone see what
it
is?
