I am still interested in doing this, but it is one of those projects
that
fell to the back burner whilst I finished of cabling the house...

I was thinking about building a simple ASP front end, with products
divided
into simple groups, such that items could be added to a group - e.g.
Baked
Beans (this could then contain all barcodes for all varieties of beans
:-)

I think a couple of people built an access db for this.. 

My enthusiasm also stopped when I couldn't find an affordable (read v
cheap)
barcode scanner :-)

There is also a ukha_barcode mailing list, which was started a while
back
when some group members started talking about barcodes, shopping lists,
book
scanning and DVD scanning. 

Aside from the hardware choices one of the main sticking points with
the
shopping list idea was that no one was able to get hold of a database of
UPC
codes and certainly the supermarkets seemed unwilling to provide. A few
people tried to start creating one, but I don't think it came to
anything.

If there is any progress on this front, I would be interested in dusting
off
my cuecat and scanteam and getting going again.

You could wire the scanners trigger into a microswitch mounted against
the
pedal of your bin, such that when you open the bin the scanner is
active....
