Simon,
If you check on eBay, there are usually loads to choose from. There have
been laser scanner types for very low cost on eBay that would suit you
perfectly. The type you see in the supermarkets and B&Q etc.

Subject: [ukha_d] Bar Code scanner
Hi,
Can anyone recommend a decent barcode scanner?
I want a barcode reader next to the bin in the kitchen and create a
shopping
list by scanning the empty packaging of stuff I want to buy again.
I want something that is fairly discrete and can read a barcode over a
short
distance - not the type that you have to hold onto the barcode.
Thanks
Simon
