For what it's worth I have managed to hang Tivo's ftp server quite
frequently , particularly when transferring a large number of files and
also when trying to transfer a fullish directory structure. The PC ftp
session hangs. I have had to reboot the Tivo each time which in my case
also starts the ftp server for me. I am not sure if your ftp server is
set up like this or perhaps you will have to manually start it as Doogie
suggests.

I would be interested in how to tell if it is running from the bash
prompt - can I do this ? - can I see all the applications that are
running easily somehow or will there be hundreds of processes and just
id's ?

hmmmm.... might be worth rebooting the tivo, or manually running

/tivo-bin/tivoftpd

I take it you can see a line which looks like this

tnlited 23 /bin/bash -login &

? There should be an ifconfig command on 2 lines after it

You could do that, but since you can telnet no prob, and haven't deleted

any files/ changed anything you shouldn't, it shouldn't be necessary to
go to that trouble. If you've not tried it already, a reboot might fix
the ftp... it's possible that you've had quite a few failed attempts
which has got tivo's ftp service in a bit of a muddle.

Apologies if I don't reply after this, I might end up going to bed
(almost sleeping at the keyboard :)... hopefully we can sort this out
for you tonight or tomorrow :)
