It is related to the networking world:

star topology: A network topology in which peripheral nodes are connected to
a central node, which rebroadcasts all transmissions received from any
peripheral node to all peripheral nodes on the network, including the
originating node.

If you have a patch panel runing out to various places, then the termination
point is going to be zero (all the others are from there on 1..n)

We used to use the term when I worked in network support in the early 90's
