I was toying around with various ideas, but if I can build a near silent
PC
for under the TV, SWMBO will be very happy...

Me thinking it could be used for:

MP3 link to Hifi - serving files from PC, and using OSD with Creative
Live!
drive
link for digital camera, to enable pictures to be downloaded.
Showing House status via web
quick web browsing..

These certainly look promising, on the one you have built, is there
much
noise from the PSU fan?

Try LinITX.com. EPIA 5000 boards are small, fanless, cheap and 
surprisingly capable - my system runs a shed load of HA stuff at just 
under 10% CPU total.
