I had BTOpenworld for a year, running with dynamic IP and Dynamic DNS.
The problem with Dynamic DNS especially with BTOpenworld is that they
have a policy of reassigning IP addresses on a regular basis (This was
introduced around August last year as a value added security measure).
The upshot is that in the time between BT assigning your address to
someone else and you updating the dynamic DNS server you can have SMTP
mail bounced to someone else's server.
Whilst I was with BT I suffered outages at the rate of at least one a
month, this coupled with the customer lack of support because I was not
using their kit and their suggestion that I re install drivers for
their
kit whenever I had a problem was getting too much. Most of their
network
problems were based either round core routing problems or gateway
authentication failures. Since going to Zen I have had no ADSL outage
that I have noticed (some have occurred out of hours for BT upgrades).
There has been one DOS attack on Zen's DNS servers since I joined which
I was able to ignore by rerouting my DNS server to talk to someone
else.
Zen's customer service is great, they send out lots of email and they
understand networks.
I have 8 static IP's (5 usable for machines) for the same price as a
dynamic address; this means I can have multiple servers exposed to the
internet with Zen. It is just great.
I know you get the staff discount, but BTOpenworld is a whole load of
agro, for speed and increased sanity I would go else where. Both
Nildram
and Zen rate highly on ADSLGuide and there are now 4 of my colleagues

Ian,
What sort of problems did you have with BTOpenworld ?
technical difficulties or customer service problems ?
The reason I ask is that my exchange has just hit its trigger level and
will
become ADSL enabled in the near future :-)
Originally I was considering Zen because of the static IP addresses
they
offered and the fact that the price was comparable to BT Openworld
which
didnt offer static IP addresses.
However, things have now changed, I have the chance of a staff offer on
either BT Broadband or BTOpenworld at a saving of quite a few quid per
month.
Does the BTOpenworld offering block any ports that would prevent me
accessing my machines from the outside world?
The dynamic IP address wouldnt be a problem as I have a way of
accessing
my
home which works with a dynamic IP address.
Thanks
Keith

Still wouldn't touch BT if they paid me, alright then, may be if they
paid me a lot ;-)

I beleive that was the old Ts&Cs - since the Self Install ADSL, you can
plug in what you like.

If they supply a router and you "tamper with it", then they
reserve the
right to suspend your ADSL service.
Personally, I would NOT recommend using BT as your ADSL ISP. I have
heard a number of horror stories surround their ISP arm's inability to
communicate with their ADSL provisioning arm.
