I suspect that there will soon be a (or maybe several) online
databases (like equifax for credit reference) retailers can register
cutomers who exercise their legal rights to return goods.  Once
someone gets on this register then distance sellers will be unwilling
to sell to these folks.

Distance selling is going to make e-tailing more risky, and therefore
more expensive.
