There's people out there who've run standard 3.5" hard disks in a standard
ATX case strapped down in the boot.  I've heard of people running this sort
of setup for a couple of years without problems.  Foam will probably be
enough, although I'd suggest a 5400rpm drive, as foam insulates heat as well
as shocks.

I'd start there.  I expect a thick piece of foam would be enough, but please
