RE: [OT] 18" TFT monitor/TV at dabs

Well - so far I'm fairly impressed - but I've only had a short play.

Display is nice and bright and of typical (average) clar= ity for today's
displays - which really means good in comparison to slightly older displays= .
Colours seem very clean and the menu structure although fiddly seems to
work.  The size of the monitor is interesting in that it doesn't appea= r any
bigger than my 15" although the screen is 3 inches larger - small beze= l
really does work well. Overall build quality is average/good I would say. Supplied IR remote is a little tacky but functional. Seems to work at all m= y
Graphics cards resolutions up to SXGA 1280x1024. Picture quality is better<= BR> at some than others - some manual adjustment of the phase can help this. No= t
sure on the native panel resolution.
Viewing angle seems good both horizontally and verticall= y (often an
issue) which is important if this is a TV. The TV module installs under a flap - it took a little coaxing to find all the stations but once setup it<= BR> works reasonably. On one station I have had to compromise the picture a
little with the fine tuning as the audio had some hiss in the best video setting. Speaker sound is very tinny - you will probably need an external setup for the sound. Picture quality (TV) is hard to judge as my analogue aerial source is not too good in this room - but up to expectations I
think - better viewed from a  distance though. 18 inches up close is t= oo
near. Certainly it's nowhere near as nice as the digital pictures I've
become accustomed too though. I did notice some teletext scan lines on one<= BR> channel but that seems to have just been one transmission. There seems to b= e
such a variation on the quality of the transmitted material nowadays -some<= BR> stuff on the same channel is very 'american type - NTSC' colour syndrome -<= BR> seems to vibrate almost whereas other stuff is great - as always on lcd's the blues tend to be the shades that shimmer the most.  The picture do= es
have the 'lcd' look.
Stand has large IR type window at front that seems to se= rve no purpose -
usb ports are not installed (option) and rotation on stand is possible and<= BR> tilt but not pivot - the Atec website is very misleading on this in it's pictures.
PIP does not work - it's not actually mentioned on DABS = spec but is on
the Atec website as an 'option' - this is a pity as you can't watch TV in a=
window as you can on most other TV capable monitors. DABS appear to have no=
purchasable option price for this either. Given this doesn't work you might=
be better feeding the monitor with an S-Video TV source anyway and saving the cost of the TV module.
Overall for the price at the time =A3399+VAT in tuner it= was an excellent
bargain although I had to pay the higher price, I still think it seems good=
value though in comparison to other 18 inch units.

    Kevin

Mark - I know DABS have a few warehouse issues at the moment so I hope you<= BR> get yours soon - mine went from order to despatch within an hour but still<= BR> took nearly a week to arrive. The call queuing customer service system is a=
nightmare.
