Response curves are very different, particularly at high frequencies.
(Like, those frequencies close in wavelength to the distance between the
active speaker element and the back of the phone enclosure.

This is a bit of a moving feast, since as the speaker element vibrates,
the distance changes, thus does the resonant frequency.

Having open baffles circumvents this.

I assumed they would be closed coz they were expensive! 
Having a grille on the back really doesn't help - surely it was more
expensive
to create this than to leave it closed?
