RE: I have seen the light.

Other side of the coin just for one small moment!

I'm quoting bits from John Sim (of RGB to SVideo converter fame) though
in an email conversation we had over Christmas:

"Quite an informative program.   Unfortunately, half way thr= ough the
recording as Tania Strecker was getting ready for her second day, my
brother changed Sky over and I missed the last half."

"I'm moving from here soon, so may change over to Sky + then too. = ;  I've
never been fully convinced about TiVo.   Yes, it's very good, but= there
are some flaws such as recorded picture quality that I just can't get
over.

"Just very annoying when you're finding the program very interesting a= nd
Smash Hit TV comes on!"

"Sky + is certainly what I'll be upgrading to, especially now that
you've told me you'll soon be able to record two channels and pause live TV.   With no loss in picture quality, and less clumbsy menus, I'= ll
happily pay the =A310 extra that I didn't with TiVo.   Unlike man= y owners
of TiVo that frequent the forums, I don't think it's the best thing
since sliced bread!   It's good, but it has many flaws and I'd ra= ther
have it work more like a VCR than letting it pick which programs to
record most of, but cut off the ending!"

Now I'm not quite as anti-Tivo as John, but I do take his point about
quality. I recorded Shrek (from Premier Widescreen) on Sky+ some weeks
ago, and the quality compares favourably with DVD. The "it is always repeated" argument doesn't hold with me. I sat down with Digiguide
before Christmas, and recorded a dozen programs specially - 8 of them
were recorded from terrestrial channels, while I was watching something
on another terrestrial channel, and often the first run stuff on Sky One or E4 is not repeated for some time. Sky + now has the facility to
buffer the last hour of live TV, so it is catching up with Tivo on the
feature count. I would like to try Tivo's suggestions for a while to see what it came up with, but for me recorded quality together with the
ability to record two data streams from Sky (which is my only source of
telly - I don't even own a terrestrial aerial) far out weighs that
feature.

Tim.
