I think the comment was about the bridging.

A PIC-based device that talked xAP over RS485 would be excellent.

However, bridging it onto Ethernet would NOT require higher level
protocols. It could be bridged using xAP over ethernet using an (already
available) xAP bridge.

understood, but the USD10 pic-based temp sensor with rs-485 and xap does
beat an ethernet implementation in price, but does not talk
ethernet ..
