I believe there ought to be a 2 inch gap for ventilation. I've recently had
the upstairs of my
bungalow done. I have roof felt and 6 inch rafters, so I have 4 inches of
insulation and 2 inches of
gap. I've used Kingspan TP10 - not *the* best insulator, but a good second
IIRC. (Problems with
getting the other, whose name escapes me).

This comes in 8'x4' sheets that you cut into shape. It cuts easily but is
relatively strong. Fitting
that stuff between the rafters is a slow, painstaking and messy job. But it
works a treat.
