I also thought this could be a problem if nailing floorboards on top. From = what I understand it is better to make the hole as close to the centre (ver= tically) as possible and away from the ends. If needing to put through alot= of cables it is better to cut out a rectangular slot along the length of t= he joist than a bigger hole.

Ive head mention of wiring snakes for cabling in this sitation. I however d= ont know where to get one :-)
