Does everyone have smaller drills than me ? I had to chop out of the top of
the joist because my drill wouldn't fit in-between the joists !
If your paranoid then you can always screw a metal strap across the cut
out for strength.

I drilled 3/4" holes approximately in the centre of the joists - this is
the
point of least stress.
Stay away from the edge of the wall, and don't "cheat" by just cutting a
chunk
out of the top of the joist a-la dodgy plumber style - this is the best way
to
weaken your joists.....
