Re: Serial LCD/VFD displays

I've been playing with www.crystalfontz.com LCD's. They are
expensive - but the quality of the display in terms of legibility is
superb. The 20x4 display with bezel is exactly the same dimensions as
a UK double wall box - although I haven't done the mod to mount it
yet.

Here's some ideas about what you can do: I've also done written some
xAP software to drive these things - so now I've got weather station
data alternating on one line, latest news headlines scrolling on one
line from teletext, and the whole display switching over to flash
important events such as doorbell ringing. Optionally it can flash
the backlight to such events as well. The display driver is able to
intercept IR events to change the display on user request (e.g. to
switch from current news headlines to traffic news), and is also able
to schedule these things based on time of day (it presents now-and-
next TV schedule items in the evenings, and can display pre-
programmed reminders). Finally, the display is aware of occupancy
events from comfort, so the backlight turns off when the room is
empty.

Anyway, a few ideas of what can be done... it's all pretty trivial
with xAP, it has to be said.
