You sure its gone?
My homeseer always has a _BAK.XML file somewhere !!

Okay, this morning, for some strange reason, all of the devices (and
events) are gone from the hdv file used by Homeseer... no warning,
nothing unusual happened, the server hadn't crashed..

And of course, I had no backup (ahem) in my defence, our backup tape
drive is on a customer site, whilst their one is repaired... :

any ideas? is it gone forever?

It may be that this is the impetus needed to just switch over to using
xPLHal completely... :)
