IIRC the latest versions of AdSheild, at least, do not stop much if
anything
automatically "for legal reasons". I guess a popup spammer
managed to
convince them that it was protected by the "sacred"
constitutional right to
freedom of speech [sic]
I seem to remember popoff used to be an excellent tool for stopping
popups
since it just stopped them all regardless of what they were. Later
versions
had a "whitelist" feature so you could authorise popups for sites
that need
it for say help files or those banks that insist on using a popup process
to
get into the Internet Banking side!
These days, I do not protect myself from popups since it is a way to
reduce
the companies I might buy from if there are several offering something
I
want over the net. I actually paid slightly more for a recent DVD
purchase
than I could have by buying from a popup site but the level of service
so
far has been impressive. For the sake of a few pounds, I am happy to
reward
that company for a pleasant browsing experience.
Mark.
