Get a third hand - I've got several.

Clothes pegs are great for small jobs and a small, bench/desk mount vice with a 'sucker base' for larger work. Pliers with a 'lacky' band are quite useful too.

More to the point, If god wanted us to solder, he would have made our fingers from asbestos (that'll stop nose picking then!). I try to use IDC (aka punch down) for as many jobs as possible these days.

  Can anybody explain why we've only evolved two hands when every
  soldering job requires at least three.....

  Just finished making some phone->RJ45 converters, I'm far too mean to
  buy 'em :)
