Re: Kinda OT: DV editing - where to start
Unfortunately the quality of the SVCD is by far inferior to the DV tape, so
the best way to keep your edited record in highest quality possible is to
put it back on tape.
I have done a lot of tests with different encoders, using different
parameters and the result is not so good for SVCD.
If you have the possibility to burn-it to a DVD-R, then it is another thing
(in MPEG2, 720x576, 6Mbps).
You can try to make miniDVD (DVD formatted data on a CD-R), but not all
standalone players can play such CD's because of the speed limitation (to
high data rate for a CD format).
A very good and simple to use tool is Power Director.
For editing purpose, I have used many softwares, but by far the easiest to
use and with good results is Pinnacle Studio (7 or 8).
Regarding the camera to use, DV-in is a must in my opinion.
I have an old JVC GR-DVL100E (model 2000), which can easily be hacked
through software for DVD-in.
You can use any Firewire card (IEE1394). Even with the cheapest one you can
do the same things as with a more expensive one.
One think to take care is the HDD capacity. You must consider about 4GB for
20min. of digital video data captured from camera.
In order to edit it and add transitions/sound/titles you need more than
double.
Best regards,
Dan

Daniel,
Yes Firewire is definitely the way to go, makes it really easy to
transfer
back and forth if you really want to put it back onto tape then you
will
need a camcorder with DV In as well - cheaper ones do not have this
by
default (software hacks around) Personally I have never felt
the need to
put back onto tape, normally burn onto a SVCD which can be played in
most
DVD players anyway - very good site www.vcdhelp.com which
covers all
editing/burning software and methods.
For editing software the Rolls Royce is Adobe Premiere - I know
there are a
few people on the list that use it professionaly, they are better
placed to
comment than me, personally though I found it overkill for my needs
and
difficult to learn. I use Pinnacle Studio which IMHO is very
good and
certainly feature rich enough for all but the most advanced
users.
Can't really comment much on which camera to go for, but am sure
others will
have many suggestions.
Mark

Subject: [ukha_d] Kinda OT: DV editing - where to start
Hi all
I'm not sure if this falls into or out of UKHA... as its computers,
cameras
and DVD :-)
I am looking to take the plunge into the world of Digital
Camcorders, and PC
editing, I am doing a bit of research at the moment, and am after
some
advice / good websites with info on the subject.
I ideally want a DV camera that can plug into a PC, and allow
editing, then
put the finished footage back onto a tape. (ok eventually onto a
DVD, but
that's a future step!), I see though that many of the cameras
available in
the UK do not have a DV-in connection - does the lack of this mean
that I
can't return the footage onto the camera once edited on a PC?
I presume Firewire is the preferred method of transfer between a
Camera and
PC - are all Firewire cards created equal - or are there some I
should watch
out for?
I last got involved in video editing about 5 years ago, using Pro
Panasonic
kit... its a new world to me now :-)
any help / advice appreciated
