On boxing day I wet to RicherSounds and spent all my Christmas money on a
surround sound amp and speakers ? I went for a Marantz 4200 mainly because
it had 4 Digital inputs and did Dolby Prologic, which means I can make use
of the amp (surround sound) for TiVo's analogue stereo recordings.

I also bought a set of Eltax Liberty 5 speakers, 2 floor standing fronts,
Centre and 2 BiPolar rears... but no Sub Woofer.

Having set the system up and listening via Dolby2 (ie. stereo->surround) I
find the centre speaker can tend to be very bassy on some dialogue (noticed
this when watching XFiles...) or sometimes a bit harsh on vocals.. is this a
"feature" of Dolby2 processing or is the speaker not matched to my
expectations ? RicherSounds suggested "reversing the polarity" to reduce the
bass ?

I currently have the Fronts set to "large" and the rears set to "small",
I've changed the centre between "Small" and "Large" but can't really tell
any difference. I've also tried turning on/off "Subwoofer" (even though I
don't have one) to try and see if it effects the quality of the centre. Can
anyone explain what the amp is actually doing when I set things to
"Large/Small" ?

I also find that although the speakers can give bass you can feel at high
volume, at normal (i.e. SWMBO ) listening volume I'm not feeling explosions
etc so I guess a Subwoofer is needed. What should I look for in a
Subwoofer.. is it better to have a narrow lower frequency band (35-150) or a
broader band (45-250) ?

Is this Gale SW OK ?

I'm also considering changing the speakers for a Sat/Sub combination that
would allow better speaker placement in our TV room.
Some things like

except it includes 6 inputs and its own amp.. would this be a problem ?

Any comments/help/advice ?

I'm speaking to RS later today with a view to changing the amp for a 4300
(which has 6 inputs.. for SACD, and 6.1 decoding), and adding a subwoofer.

Marcus
