[OTish] Running programs as a service in XP

Anyone know if there's a way to run any old program as a service in XP?
Or do programs have to be specifically coded to be able to run as a
service (which I suspect). I want to run ACE client on a PC that gets
used a lot and don't want it to get shut down or in the way.
