I guess you're on dialup?

Pretty sure this is what you want - www.mailwasher.net - it's
certainly the recommendation on some other forums I'm on for people in
the same boat. It lets you download headers only, marks things as
spam, then lets you download the rest into your mail client.

If you get your own domain name and hosting, then some hosts (eg
http://www.rapidhoster.co.uk/?pg=ukha)
will give you the option of
SpamAssassin server side so you can pre-junk things.

Personally, I download all my mail to a linux box and run a local copy
of SpamAssassin so I can train it with my own ham and spam to improve
results.
