Best I can help with is the YAC home page here:

http://www.sunflowerhead.com/software/yac/

I just have this line in my rc.sysinit[.hack] file:

/tivo-bin/yac &

Which runs the TiVo YAC listener in the background on TiVo.

Once you have YAC for TiVo installed, for xAP to use it you just need
to run the following app on a Server PC somewhere and tweak it so that
the IP address for your TiVo is specified:

<http://www.xapframework.net/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=24>

This has the advantage of keeping additional load off the TiVo (mine
really seems to struggle sometimes). Then any xAP OSD messages you
send at TiVo will get displayed.

Those OSD messages need to be generated and can be by a variety of xAP
applications. You'll need some kind of CID device driver for whatever
hardware you use.
