Ah yes, the good old English words "waiter" and
"pint"...

The word "waiter" is 14th Century in the sense of "atetndant
or
watchman". The first recorded usage in its modern sense of
"sevants
who waits at tables dates" was in 1483. It derives, obviously, from
the word "wait". The word "wait" is 12th Century from
the Old Norman
French "waiter" - meaning "to watch".

The word "pint"'s first recorded usage was in 1354, this time
from
the Old French "pinte." It is probably derived from the
Latin "pincta" meaning "painted" and refers to the
notion of a
painted mark on the vessel, indicating the quantity.

Good news on the driving, however. The word "drive" iteslf is
from
the Old English "drifan". And the word "left" is a
Kentish form of
the Old English "lyft".
