Hi John

If you want a generator to take the whole load of your house the cost would
be prohibitive.

What you need to do is work out what is ESSENTIAL during a power failure eg

Fridge
Freezer
Central Heating Boiler ( assuming you have Gas or Oil )
Minimal lighting for safe movement about the home ( 100W bulb in a room
rather than 36 x 50W downlighters)
A TV for some entertainment ( dont forget the aerial boosters etc)

Then allow a bit extra and then see what it would cost for a Genny.

BT has massive generators in its exchanges but they still only power
essential services. Obviously all the exchange equipment, equipment aircon
and lights, but non essential things like electric cookers, fan heaters,
lifts etc are out of action for the duration of the power cut.
