I use a Lanready wireless network camera in my garage, which is also
available badged as D-Link and under a couple of other brand names.

It's supplied with PC s/w to do motion detection, time/date stamping,
and archiving, and there's also a couple of I/Os ports on it so you can
do motion detection with an external PIR sensor(s) without having to run
the PC all the time (it will email you when the sensor is triggered).

However, as the camera itself isn't particularly sensitive, so you might
want to use a CCTV camera with IR LEDs built in. Fortunately, Lanready
do a version that uses an external camera:

I bought my cwc-8100 from www.avready.com via ebay. I've seen very
similar looking ones on www.solwise.co.uk though.

An external aerial would be much better. Putting the WAP in the house or
the barn, and mounting an omnidirectional aerial outside would probably
be best (I've not attempted anything like that myself though). Solwise
also have some aerials on their website...
