"Stung by criticism over the current profusion of recordable DVD
formats, nine of the original DVD Forum members have come up with a new
blue-laser recordable format, with the eventual aim of replacing the
current crop of machines. Blu-Ray uses a more tightly-focused
blue-violet laser and higher capacity discs of between 27 and 50GB each.
It's predominantly designed for use with high-definition television
systems in the US and Japan. Expect to see Blu- Ray machines shipping in
the UK by the end of 2004. That said, other members of the DVD Forum,
led by Toshiba, are proposing their own high-capacity recordable
standard. Chaos ensues."

Does anyone know of any evidence to point to which format of recording
will become king over the next few years?
