I originally had the WAP11 along with the LinkSys WPC11 card....

This was utter crap. But it was the fault of the card not the WAP11.
There are several version of the WAP11 - the latest having a nice web
interface to configure, rather than the USB of earlier models.
Apart from a few setup issues, I've found the WAP11 to be ultra stable and
reliable, and with the Orinoco cards it's range is excellent.
