RE: Re: Automated Roller Blinds?

I have been looking at automating my one and only blind. It is one of
those ones with a wand for tilting and cords for raising and lowering
rather than the knobby cord type referred to originally. I plan to make a
motorised something which can pull the cord etc. to raise and lower it.
Travel limit will be done by some form of sensor on the blind. Maybe a
reed switch, beam break, something else? Anyway, I shall post details when
it gets done. I hope to use my relay board and its xAP powered controller
to do the brainy bit.

The tilting bit will be done by a wand turner from LetsAutomate as I have
one and the same relay board. Manual override switches will of course be
there for the odd occasions they are needed.

Since the travel limits on both devices will not be from cords they should
be quite consistent and not suffer from the problems below.

Steven,

I have to agree with your comments on the use of these units for
vertical roller blinds - my experience is exactly the same. However,
they are *excellent* for controlling "normal" curtains and
horizontally-opening blinds. I've used a couple of these units for those
purposes for years with absolutely no problems.

I'm also interested if anyone that can recommend a good solution for
automating vertical blinds - I have at least 6 that I want to
convert....

thanks,

Julian

I've actually got two of the models referred to, and have to say I won't
be
buying any more. The problem I have with them is that I have to
constantly
keep re-adjusting the start and stop positions. The cord isn't, as far
as I
can tell, slipping on the drive wheel, so I guess it's just a design
problem.
The second issue is that about once a week the switch used to stop the
motor
and define the direction of next travel gets stuck mid-way through its
travels, leaving the unit stuck such that it won't move again until you
manually move the switch to the far position.

This is my experience using them on one fairly light roller blind and a
fairly
heavy roller blind.

If anyone has suggested alternatives I'd be happy to hear from them,
there are
several other blinds I need to automate.
