Phew, Got it back up and running.

The disk is a Maxtor 120GB 5400rpm model which I bought just under 12
months ago. I extracted the disk from the Tivo and ran the Maxtor
Powermax utility expecting it to fail.

It passed!

Mounted the Tivo directories under linux and reversed the changes I'd
made to TivoWeb. While in the directory I noticed that all the file
ownerships and groups had been set to 1000. I reset them all back to
root.

Checked on rc.sysinit while I was at it and as expected, that remained
untouched with the correct attributes.

Put it all back together, booted and hey presto - fired up 1st time.

Don't know if it was the replacement TivoWeb script or the file
attributes or just the fact I'd taken it apart and put it back together
but hey, I've got my Tivo back. Now, what to do with that replacement
120GB drive I ordered on overnight delivery from ebuyer........

XBOX !!!

Don - a happy bunny again
