Claude,

even in standby the disk is spinning.  The only time it is not spinning is
when
you remove the power from it!
In standby mode, the TiVo will record it's own suggestions as well as
programs
you have told it to record.
It should actually be better for the disk to be spinning 24/7 than being
started/stopped all the time.  This is true also for non mechanical devices
-
eg TV's which are more likely to fail from constant power surges when they
are
switched on/off than through continuous use....
