Re: Driving White LED's

Hi Tony

I plan to use a PIC to give me dimming and on/off control of my LED's. It
will also have an RS485 interface for serial connection so the good old
home control systems can talk to it. You never know but it is likely it
will use the xAP protocol I am currently coding for the relay board
controller. This is a high priority project as SWMBO said so and the
evenings are closing in - there is no light in the cupboard at the moment.
It won't do the current matching etc. of the Maxim chip but for most of us
this won't be a problem. I was thinking of around 15 brightness levels but
this is something I will have to play with as maybe more or less will be
needed.

Not that I was part of the bulk buy (in the interests of paying the
mortgage
you've got to let some (most?) of these pass you by!), but I found this
interesting IC on the Maxim web site

http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm?qv_pk=3553

Only available in Surface Mount, it drives up to five white LED's,
current-matching each one to ensure close output brightness matching.  And
it dim's!

Runs from 5V, with a two-bit input determining Off, 1/3, 2/3, or Full
brightness.

Dimmable skirting board / stairs lighting?  Certainly got me thinking...
