Andy,
I look after a lot of IBM laptops & despite useing lithium ion they do die
after a while (not a very long while in a lot of cases) if it appears in
your power options in control panel you could try a calibrate, or try
forcing it to run out & recharge but sounds like it's too late for that.

The only other suggestion I have is to very carefully skim all the terminals
with an emery board (not a metal file!!!) then blast with an air duster as
some laptop batteries have condition sensors & if the connection is not
being made it may report as being dead when not. Doesn't sound likely tho.

The bad news is these are normally about ?100 - ?150 each

If you do replace make sure you fully chjarge & discharge the new battery
before using normally to increase the time before this happens again.
