I have set up a service that might be of interest for those of you who
like me have no ADSL but still want to connect to their home server from
the internet.

Using a server I have colocated at my ISP (i.e. it has a permanent
connection to the net) I have set up various web pages that cause my
home server to connect and log it's current IP and then go on to create
a oage with connections back to the server. There are also pages for
maintenance including connection scheduling and everything is password
controlled.

It works as follows:
1. Server details (name, connection codes and passwords) are set up on
the colo server.
2. The home server is left with a browser window open on a specific url
(located on the colo server).
3. The page is set to refresh according to a schedule that is maintained
through web pages.
4. Every time the page refreshes, the current IP address is captured and
recorded in the database on the colo server.
5. Another page on the colo server is used to hold links to the home
server and these links will be automatically updated with the IP address
>from 6. Passwords, links and schedule can all be maintained online.

If you want to see the application in action then go here
http://www.Solarfish.com/homeconnect/homeview.asp?AccessCode=user1&Acces
sPassword=pass1 to see a page linking back to the home server (note that
the IP address is not valid so the actual links will not work). There is
also an icon for logging on to maintenance screens (code is user2,
password is pass2). Once you have logged on, then refreshing the
http://www.Solarfish.com/homeconnect/homeview.asp?AccessCode=user1&Acces
sPassword=pass1 screen will give a link for maintenance. Please don't
change the passwords as it will prevent others from accessing the site!

Finally you can see the screen used for the home connection here
http://www.solarfish.com/homeconnect/homeconnect.asp?UpdateCode=user2&Up
datePassword=pass2 you will see that it picks up your IP address and
will show a count down to the next refresh as per the connection
schedule.

If anyone would like to use this service, there will be a trial period
of 2 weeks after which I will ask for a tenner a year towards my server
costs and development time.

Regards

Graham
