Thanks Joseph (and Mark Boyce who emailed the same solution privately).
This is exactly the sort of 'trick' I was looking for. After more years
than I care to admit of working with Excel, I had never used 'text to
columns' with anything other than CSV, space or tab delimited data. It
should do exactly what I need.
