can anyone enlightened me how to use a multimeter.

to clarify -

I have two wires coming into my thermostat. I guess if they are shorted the
central heating comes on. How do i measure the current and voltage passing along
these wires so i can get a suitable relay so i can control it using homeseer and ocelot.

where do you put the pins of the multimeter when measure current and voltage.
i am always worried about shorting something.
