I have a BT callerid unit somewhere at home that used to superimpose the
caller number and name on the TV screen.  It did it by just sitting between
the TV and the cable box/video, I'm guessing it just took the incoming
picture and dumped the text over it before sending it on to the TV.  If you
put the test on earlier in the source to TV chain you would risk recording
it on your video or TiVo which isn't what you want.
