Sounds like you've answered your own question ;-)

To go a certain distance, you need a certain amount of gain.  This must be
distributed between the communicating radios.  For the sort of distances
mentioned, you will need an amount of gain at each end.  Last week, we
were going 70 yards through buildings using a 6dB panel antenna (1dB for
the connector puts us on the legal limit) at one end, and a standard card
with no external antenna at the other end.  We were quite chuffed :-)
