You'll need either a wireless card or an access point at each end and an
antenna.

If these cards are as cheap as last time, then you'll be up and running
for around 100 quid.

Not at that range.  Without complicated (read: expensive) equipment,
you're looking at under a mile for the maximum theoretical distance whilst
remaining legal.  Of course, the band is policed by complaints.  This
means someone will actually have to complain about your LAN befre they do
anything, and the most likely response is to ask you to stop.  You could
be unlucky and have all your hardware confiscated, and slapped with a fine
though.  Don't think it's ever happened though.

At that distance, it's almost mandatory.  You may be lucky enough to
reflect signals of a large building or hill though.
