Someone posted a link to a place that did the pioneer dvd recorder
for 200 plus 50 dvd recordables.
Wasn't this "Silicon Group" and only available to customers
calli=
ng into
their shop (i.e. not mail order)... problem is (for me) that they only
have shops in Scotland !
The bare OEM A104 drive is available for =A3195 from big pockets at the
mom=
ent
(no software or fixing screws supplied)
Would this dvd recorder allow me to back up my numerous home
videos to dvd ?
any pitfalls ?
You can back up the tapes as long as you have some way of capturing
them
i.e. TV capture card, and they haven't been Macrovision protected
(unless
your capture card can disable macrovision). You also need some MPEG2
compression software (TMPGEnc) and DVD authoring software.. oh and
plenty
of hard disc space for the captured file , the encoded file and the ISO
image.
DVD-R discs are single sided , single layer so they can only store
4.7gig
(actually about 4.3gig in real terms) which is less than most DVD
movies
(which usually use dual layer to achieve 6-8 gig storage). Using
full quality high bitrate your looking at only 1 hour per disc, to get
more than this you'll probably need to reduce the bitrate/quality or
split over two discs.
